Here are Kristen's favorite books!
This one is weird in the best possible way. The prose is exquisitely literary, the narrative is a tightly-wound twist of different moments in time and space… and the enemies-to-undying-lovers story between the two main characters is a sapphic delight.
A chilly read no matter what the temperature is outside. Moreno-Garcia sets this story up like a very traditional Gothic narrative and then carves out its heart, breathing new terror into old tropes. I don’t scare easily, and this one got me good!
My partner and I are avid followers of The Bachelorette and its surrounding franchises, so naturally you can find us kvetching constantly about its many, many, MANY shortcomings. We can't stop watching, naturally, but man, would it kill them to cast a franchise lead who isn’t a generic-looking skinny blonde lady? Enter One to Watch, a novel written by and for fans about a pseudo-Bachelorette franchise that picks a plus-size influencer to be its next star. In addition to being as binge-able as the show at its best, this is an incredibly smart take on the issues plus-sized women face as they increasingly embrace their own beauty and desirability in public spaces.
Gideon became one of my favorite fantasy protagonists of all time before I even finished this book. She’s a jock with simple desires. She wants to fight with her huge sword, meet beautiful women, and more than anything, escape the necromantic tomb-planet she’s been stuck on since she was born. In true journey-novel fashion, this book is Gideon getting all three of those things in ways she never could have possibly imagined. (WARNING: Do NOT look up any information on the subsequent books in the series until you’ve finished this one! Even the titles are spoilers. It's that intense.)
